Running A Cat Sanctuary Pt 10 : Feeding Cats

Food For 150 Cats

Feeding 150 cats is no small task! In my experience, the top picks for dry cat food are Purina One Tender Selects Chicken and Purina One +Plus Healthy Kitten Dry Cat Food – Chicken, High-Protein.

These options are affordable and widely available and provide excellent nutrition, which is crucial for our nutritionally compromised cats. Your role in providing these with the best nutrition is invaluable.

Morning Meal

We also feed cats wet food each morning. I often choose Purina® Friskies® All Life Stages Cat Wet Food—15.75 lb., enriched with vitamins.

Despite my expectations, I’ve discovered that homeless and feral cats can be selective. They tend to reject shredded cat food and any variants labeled ‘for indoor cats.

All Cat Food Brands Accepted

We gratefully accept donated cat food, regardless of the brand. Every bit helps, and we make sure nothing goes to waste.

Donations play a significant role in our feeding routine, which include wet and dry food in the mornings and dry food alone in the evenings.

For kittens or cats needing extra nutrition, we adjust their diet to ensure they get the necessary nutrients.

Adding nutritional supplements like lysine and probiotics to wet food can benefit cats’ health. For feral cats who are hard to handle, we mix oral flea medicine with wet food during certain times of the year. We also hide medication for parasites and worms in their food to simplify treatment.

Proper food storage is crucial to keep it safe from pests. I recommend using Gunner Food Crates to protect the food from ants, bugs, raccoons, skunks, and even bears.

Ants & Flies

Summer brings the challenge of dealing with ants and flies. Ant-proof bowls can help keep ants away. These plates are easy to maintain and don’t require water or soap. We use compostable plates for wet food, ensuring the cats eat quickly before flies become an issue and making disposal simple.

For water, I prefer using durable water bowls from Costco. These bowls have a wide mouth, stay cooler in the summer, and can be easily cleaned with white vinegar every few months.

The Future?

I’m also exploring ways to create automated feeding systems for feeding cats and continuous-use watering stations connected to water hoses. Once I figure these out, I’ll share the details.

Your ideas and experiences are valuable to us. If anyone has ideas or experience with simplified, automated feeding and watering solutions, I’d love to hear from you!
